How old is too old to braid your hair

Well, I voted that it's not unusual at all. But, I live in New Mexico, which is a melting pot of all sorts of cultures and ethnicities. It is quite a common hairstyle among the artistic, and the earthy-crunchy women, as it is among Native Americans. But, my dd's soccer coach who is in her 70s and is as anglo as they come wears a french braid down the back almost every day. I am 53 and would think nothing of wearing a french braid, if my hair were long enough.

I say all that, but really I don't think that one's age has any place in the discussion of how one wears their hair, or their clothing, or their shoes. Why does it matter? Braids aren't my default anymore because I have a favorite daily bun that gets in the way less, but I absolutely wear braids as a tax paying real adult.

Long, gray braids are a timeless fashion. Just look at Willie Nelson. I picked other because it depends on the braids. Pippi be Longstocking braids I love the look of braids, at any age, and while I got pretty good at braiding my daughter's hair when she was young, I have never been able to braid my own. Does anyone know of a good tutorial for doing a French braid on yourself for the braiding-challenged? I think that one reason braids, especially high on the head, don't pop up as much in the over 40 set is that these are the years that some women start coloring their hair and within a week or two after coloring roots will be showing, any updo reveals these gray roots.

I do think though that different hairstyles can give a different feel. Like a lot of people a long braid on an older woman seems hippy or maybe literary. OTOH, if the hair is long but up, braided or not, it often look quite elegant and put together. Older women who want to look polished but also more modern often seem to have shorter styles.

Posted January 8, edited. They definitely become rare by late teens. That said, wear them if you want to. ETA: I thought you meant 2 braids. But, one braid isn't common either.

I wear braided pigtails all the time, they're my favorite style. I don't think I'm too old for them at twenty. Actually, I think pigtails, braided or not, look fine on people a lot older than me. They are a youthful look, certainly, but I don't think they look childish, especially low pigtails. August 7th, , AM 7. The ones in the picture are great. As long as it's not high ponytails, they tend to look a little skanky. August 7th, , AM 8.

I don't think you're ever too old to do anything you did as a child. Well maybe a few things but not a lot If it solves your problems and looks good then that's all there is to it, you're doing it to please yourself not others. August 7th, , AM 9.

Aww thanks all! The reason I asked was because this I had mentioned I wore my hair in them once, and she was in disgust We were on a group cruise on Celebrity years ago, and one of the gentlemen with us was in his 60's. He just had a few strands left on top, and we talked him into getting them braided in Antigua.

He was such a good sport, and the "braider" did a great job of getting those few strands into a small braid with some colorful beads. He was the hit of the dining room at formal dinner, and we had a formal group picture taken. We all had a great laugh, and so did he!

This has been fun, I think I will get my hair braided. Years ago I had my hair braided while in Ocho Rios, It was the last port so I came home in braids and went to work. We were in state survey at the hospital I work at. No body seemed to mind. They all wanted to hear about my vacation. I then tipped. My hair is to my waist. It takes two people over a hour to do my hair. No one has ever pulled on my hair to the point that it hurt, but the little flower beads they used with the corn rolls were uncomfortable from the wires they used.

My daughter will be happy to tell you her horror stories. Also, she found the unbraiding much worse than the braiding. You are never too old to have your hair braided, but there is a time frame when it should not be done. Below are my opinions on hairbraiding:. If you are a female between , full hairbraiding will never ever look as cute as Bo Derek. Frankly, it will look more like Bo Diddley!
