How much vermouth in a martini

But let's face it, there is no disgrace in ignoring this rule and being more generous with the vermouth. After all, the rule is based on a misunderstanding of what "dry" means. Dry does not mean "keep the vermouth in the cupboard.

And a dry martini is, essentially, a martini with dry not sweet vermouth in it. At any rate, in pursuit of my own personal perfect martini, I've gone from one extreme to the next where the vermouth is concerned, from the austere — rinsing out the glass with vermouth swirl and dump — to the extravagant: using equal measures of vermouth as gin which is way too much vermouth for my tastes.

From this extreme of equal parts, I gradually pulled back on the vermouth by slight measures until I hit it just right. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what that perfect amount is. There's this nick on my shot glass, and I fill the vermouth to the top of that nick.

Put the martini glass in the freezer as well. Spray vermouth from an atomizer bottle around the inside of the glass. Pour in the gin and add a couple olives or onions - Perfect! Pearl onion rather than the cheeezzy olive, pleeezzze. Just to clarify, a dry martini DOES refer to the amount of vermouth in the actual drink as opposed to Manhattans, in which case it refers to the type of vermouth used.

As for this recipe, perfectly proportioned for a classic martini cocktail. For an extra dry martini, swirl and dump vermouth to infuse taste without overpowering the gin. For an exceptional martini try Magellan, and for a slightly unusual one, try Hendrick's. Los Angeles, CA. My favorite as well. With only 3 essential ingredients, a classic martini is one of the easiest cocktails around. The martini's simplicity has no bearing on its elegance. You will feel on top of the world after your first sip.

Before you start, make sure your vodka and vermouth is quality—since they make up the drink, the cheap stuff just won't do. You can save the cheap stuff for our Peanut Butter Cup Martini.
